Golf found 129 new fans over two days at Coleambally Central School, in one of the biggest school activations run in the Western Riverina region this year, with an almost even split of 66 girls and 63 boys picking up a club for the first time.

Students from Kindergarten right through to Year 12 took part in the two-day activation, delivered by Golf NSW Engagement Officer for the Murray Region, Jody Fleming, which combined the Lunch Time Launch It simulator with outdoor activities on day one. Poor weather on day two forced the program indoors, but it didn’t dampen enthusiasm, with students still getting stuck into the game.

Student Rowan said the sessions had already made a difference to his game, with “some excellent tips” that would help improve his swing, while fellow student Thomas picked up “some good tips” for his grip and hip rotation. For student Harvey, the simulator was the highlight: “It was really enjoyable. I loved the simulator and the chipping.” Student Delilah put it simply: “Very fun! I can actually hit a golf ball now!”

The momentum carried into the evening, with a MyGolf Come Try clinic held at Coleambally Golf Club on from 3.30pm to 5pm. Another 49 participants, again spanning Kindergarten to Year 12, turned out for the after-school session. Student Courtney said it was “a great experience,” and enjoyed seeing everyone have a go at something new, while fellow student Alex found the smaller after-school group meant more one-on-one time to work on technique.

The activation was also a reminder of the community spirit that comes with bringing golf to a small town. Jody arrived in Coleambally the day before the program, and shortly after arriving ran into car trouble. Lauren, owner of The Coffee Nest, offered up the use of her own car for several days, despite having never met Jody before, while Anthony from Coleambally Automotive Centre got the vehicle back on the road. Coleambally Central School teacher Jemma Pound also helped coordinate the visit, rounding out a community effort that made sure the two days ran smoothly, both on and off the course.

With well over 150 students and participants introduced to golf across the two days, Coleambally has shown just how much appetite there is for the game in the Western Riverina, and how far a community can go to welcome it.
