One of the biggest weeks on the amateur golfing calendar is back, with entries for the 2027 Avondale Amateur now open. Play runs from the Practice Round on Monday 18 January through to Friday 22 January, the week directly before the NSW Amateur Championship.
The Avondale Amateur is regarded as one of the premier events on the Australian amateur golfing calendar, and one of the toughest fields an amateur will face all year. It’s an elite men’s and women’s tournament, where men compete for the Avondale Medal and women compete for the Avondale Bowl. The event is played over 72 holes of stroke play, with the field limited to 168 players and a cut made after 36 holes to the top half and ties in each event. Handicap limits sit at GA 1.0 for men and GA 3.0 for women.
The two events have a long history at Avondale individually. The Avondale Bowl dates back to 1951, while the Avondale Medal has been played for since 1961. They were run as separate tournaments for decades before being brought together as the Avondale Amateur in 2017, the same year the event joined the Australian National Ranking and World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) calendars. Since 2019, the Avondale Bowl has also formed part of the Karrie Webb Series.
For the country’s best amateurs, it’s the start of a huge back-to-back stretch, with two of the toughest fields of their year to navigate on Sydney courses in consecutive weeks.
Few players have left as big a mark on the tournament as Declan O’Donovan. The Avondale Golf Club member won back-to-back Avondale Medals in 2024 and 2025, part of a stretch that also saw him defend his NSW Amateur title and go on to win the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, before turning professional. Harrison Endycott is another to have gone back-to-back at Avondale, winning the Medal in 2015 and 2016 on his way to a professional career of his own. Their names sit among a growing honour roll that the 2027 field will be chasing to join.
The 2026 titles were won by Kayun Mudadana (New South Wales GC), who claimed the Avondale Medal, and Ella Scaysbrook (The Australian GC), who took out the Avondale Bowl.
Entries will close at 8pm on Thursday 31 December 2026.
