Some of the state’s best amateur golfers will fly the flag for Australia later this year when the World Amateur Team Championships tee off in Singapore and the Phillipines in the next two months.

Ella Scaysbrook (The Australian GC) and Declan O’Donovan (Avondale GC) have both earned selection for the prestigious biennial event, which will see the women competing for the Espirito Santo Trophy (1–4 October) and the men for the Eisenhower Trophy (8–11 October) at Tanah Merah Country Club.

New South Wales is well represented in the Seniors, also, with Gemma Dooley (NSW GC) , Lousie Mullard (Wyong) and Wendy Harrington (Monash CC) all being named in the national team for the APGC Senior Amateur Championship,

For Scaysbrook, the call-up comes off the back of a remarkable breakthrough on the world stage. The 18-year-old’s run to the semi-finals of the US Women’s Amateur in Oregon last week captured attention across the country, after she survived a sudden-death playoff just to make the match play field.

“I birdied the last hole of my second round to even have a chance at playing the match play and then had to wake up early the next morning for the playoff,” she said.

“I feel like anything can happen in match play, so that was how I was looking at it.

“It’s definitely a privilege to represent Australia. We all strive for that opportunity, and when you get to pull on the green and gold, it means a lot.”

O’Donovan’s inclusion follows an equally impressive season, highlighted by his win at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship in August, a result that announced him as one of the country’s rising golf talents.

The pair will join four of Australia’s top young players, Victorian Jazy Roberts and South Australian Raegan Denton in the women’s team, and Queenslanders Harry Takis and Billy Dowling in the men’s team.

Before Singapore, NSW will also be strongly represented at the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation Senior Amateur Championship in the Philippines (24–26 September).

Reigning Australian Senior Women’s Amateur champion Gemma Dooley (NSW GC) will headline Australia’s seven-strong side as they look to defend their dominance in the team event, having won both the men’s and women’s championships last year in Vietnam.

Wyong’s Louise Mullard and Monash Country Club’s Wendy Harrington join Dooley in the women’s line-up, with Graham Hourn, Greg Rhodes, Mark Allen and Ian Frost rounding out the squad.
