Despite the chill of the Capital Country air, it’s warm where Josh Armstrong stands—back at Queanbeyan Golf Club, back where he won last year, and back among family.

“It’s like a family reunion,” Armstrong says with a grin.

“My sister’s back in town, my nephew and all that too. They’ll be staying at mum’s house as well. So it makes it nice and comfy.”

Comfort, it seems, is the theme of the week. While most players arrive at the final Ford NSW Regional Qualifier with nerves and ambition, Armstrong brings a quiet confidence and a sense of ease that only home soil can offer.

“I think the plan is mum’s going to come out for a wander,” he adds.

“My sister’s got to go to work. But I think you sort of just end up being nice and comfy with pretty much everything. Golf and life, I guess.”

Armstrong’s win here last year was a standout moment, but he’s not letting the pressure of defending the title weigh him down.

“Well, at the end of the day, you just go and play golf,” he says plainly.

“Every other person here wants to win as well. So, if I play my cards right and just do my thing, I’ll give myself a chance at being able to defend or repeat. But yeah, nothing really changes.”

That grounded mindset has served him well throughout the season. A solid showing at Coffs Harbour secured his spot in the Ford NSW Open, and while his finish at Catalina wasn’t headline-grabbing, Armstrong remains unfazed.

“Even Catalina, I hit it really good and didn’t really convert anything,” he reflects.

“So, you know, whatever I finished—45th or whatever it was—I didn’t really feel like I played that bad. But again, that’s also how golf goes too. So just keep rolling with it.”

As for Queanbeyan itself, Armstrong is keeping a close eye on the weather, hoping to avoid a repeat of last year’s soggy second day.

“Obviously, hopefully, touch wood, we don’t get as much rain as we did on day two last year,” he says.

“Greens got a little bit of bounce in them, but they’re nice and quick. I know there has been a lot of weather here, so you’ve got to bear that in mind too. But overall, it’s good.”

While the qualifier is important, Armstrong’s sights are set on something larger. With the NSW Open locked in, he’s using this week to fine-tune his game ahead of a pivotal career move.

“Just keep trying to get better,” he says.

“I want to go to Asia Q School this year and try to progress my career a little bit too. So, it’s more just fine-tuning. If you do everything right, then sure, you’ll give yourself a chance to hold the trophy. But you’ve got to think bigger picture as well.”

Josh Armstrong may be the defending champion, but he’s not chasing ghosts or gripping too tight. He’s here to play, to improve, and to enjoy the rare comfort of competing in a place that feels like home.

Round One of the final 2025 Ford NSW Open Regional Qualifier at Queanbeyan Golf Club will begin at 7:30 tomorrow morning.
