The JNJG Talent Pathway is a staged development system designed to identify, verify, and accelerate junior golf talent across New South Wales.
The pathway provides a transparent, inclusive, and regionally aligned process that supports players from early identification through to elite performance environments. It is built around long-term athlete development, focusing on:
- Technical skill development
- Tactical awareness and Golf IQ
- Physical capacity and athleticism
- Psychosocial growth and behaviour
Level 1 – Talent Identification
Tournament-Based Identification
Emerging talent is identified through objective competition data and observation, with an emphasis on:
- Performance relative to field strength
- Scoring trends and consistency
- Performance under pressure
- Key skill indicators (ball striking, short game, putting)
A weighted event system ensures that stronger tournaments contribute more significantly to player assessment. JNJG Junior Masters Series events serve as the foundation for tournament development and pathway progression.
Regional Talent Assessment Days
Players identified through competition are invited to Regional Assessment Days, delivered across NSW. Each Golf NSW/JNJG Regional Manager will conduct a Regional Assessment Day within their region
These sessions provide a structured and consistent evaluation environment, including:
- Skills testing (short game, putting, dispersion)
- Coach observation and benchmarking
- Physical maturation and training history
- Introduction to mental skills and nutrition frameworks
This stage ensures equal access for regional and metro players through alignment with Regional Manager catchments.
Regional Camps
Selected players progress into JNJG Regional Talent Camps, delivered across key hubs. Players are selected based on involvement and performance in Tournaments and Talent Assessment Activities.
These camps focus on both development and deeper assessment, including:
- Physical screening and movement assessment
- Behavioural indicators such as coachability and engagement
- Continued tracking of technical and tactical development
- Athlete education (physical, mental, and lifestyle)
Regional Representative Events
Players may be selected into representative matchplay events, which contribute to progression decisions:
- North v South Cup (regional athletes)
- Sydney East v West (metropolitan athletes)
These events assess:
- Matchplay performance under pressure
- Team behaviours and competitiveness
- Decision-making in competitive settings
Level 2 – Talent Verification
JNJG Development Squad
This stage formally verifies developing athletes within a structured program.
Program Features:
- Seasonal program (June – November)
- Training camps and tournament blocks
- Ongoing regional support
Focus Areas:
- Trainability and commitment
- Performance progression
- Adoption of development behaviours
Selection is informed by outcomes from Level 1 events and assessments.
City vs Country Match
A key verification event within Level 2.
Players compete in a team matchplay environment, where assessment focuses on:
- Resilience and competitive mindset
- Decision-making under pressure
- Readiness to transition to elite-level programs
Level 3 – Achieving Talent
Advanced Talent Squad
This program supports athletes preparing for high-performance environments.
Key elements include:
- Individualised development planning
- Performance analytics and benchmarking
- Structured tournament scheduling
- Integrated physical and psychological support
Elite Talent Squad
The highest level within the pathway, targeting athletes ready for state and national representation.
Key Outcomes:
