Home State Victory Especially Sweet For Price
Sutherland Shire-born Aron Price claimed his first win in almost six years- and his home state Championship – with victory in the Gloria Jeans NSW Open at Castle Hill Country Club.
After rounds of 66, 66 and 68 in the rain-affected opening three days, Price was tied for the lead with Queensland’s Stephen Bowditch.
Inspired by playing a tournament he caddied in as a kid 20 years ago, Price shot a steady two-under final round to finish four shots ahead of former NSW Open Champ Aaron Townsend, South Australia’s Adam Bland, Victorian Jack Wilson.
Newcastle’s Callan O’Reilly claimed low amateur honours with a four-round score of 13-under par.
The triumph was the first big win for Price since winning the Livermore Valley Wine Country Championship on the then the US Nationwide tour- now known as the Korn Ferry tour – where he plied his trade for almost 11 years.
A graduate of Georgia Southern University, Price had a taste of the big time, playing on the PGA tour between 2009-2011.
The 2013 NSW Open was Price’s first pro tour win on home soil, and he was especially thrilled knowing it was his home state Championship.
“At any level, a four-round win is a great feeling. Winning is winning.
“I grew up playing in the NSW junior events…I would rather win the NSW Open than the Queensland or West Australian Open,” Price said after his victory.
