Eric Apperly Delight for Avondale

2023 Eric Apperly Shield Winners - Avondale

Avondale has defeated The Australian to claim the 2023 Eric Apperly Shield played at Concord Golf Club.

It has been a successful year for the North Shore club, picking up its second pennant flag, after winning the Division 1 Major Pennants earlier in the year.

Runners up for the second year in a row, The Australian were unable to bridge back the quick start from Avondale’s top three players.

Riley Millers and Rachel Lee were Avondale’s first points of the contest, both with solid 4/3 wins.

Callum Sharp picked up Avondale’s third point of the contest with a 2/1 win and then Will Moody calmly holed his putt to save par and clinch a 3/2 win over Annika Rathbone and the Eric Apperly Shield.

With two matches remaining on course, The Australian’s Tom Heaton in his last Eric Apperly match tied his match with Declan O’Donovan.

Sean Ryan and Harrison Gourlay also tied their match to end the contest.

“This year was a great year for the club. We were challenged against top teams like St. Michael’s and Concord, and today all things fell into place against The Australian.”

“I’m very proud of the team and our win to go along with our Major Pennant win,” smiled Avondale’s Manager Henry.

“We had a massive squad of 11 players this year and everyone had a game which was great.”

“Declan O’Donovan and Will Moody were impressive going undefeated; but also younger players like Rachel Lee and Riley Millers were impressive too.”

“We have a young group of players who we hope can continue to grow and looking forward to defending our Eric Apperly and Major Pennants titles.”
