Millar Too Strong In Skins Showdown

NSW Regional Open Series

For the second year straight, Matt Millar has made ‘hay’ at Queanbeyan in the club’s annual celebrity skins shootout.

Millar grabbed the five available skins on the final hole of the match to pocket a cool $4000 in prize money and bragging rights over his opponents, Marcus Fraser, Dimi Papadatos, and Queanbeyan Head Professional Jake Nagle in front of a gallery of about 400 followers.

It wasn’t all one way traffic though, early on it looked like Corowa’s Fraser, and the Central Coast’s Papadatos were going to walk away with the lions share of the cash, leaving locals Millar and Nagle empty- handed.

A couple of halved holes on five and six however, set Nagle up on the 7th hole for his first good look at a big payday, however, his putt from about six feet slid by.

“My caddy said don’t give the hole away, and I know they always break towards the river, couldn’t see it though and it broke like two inches,” Nagle lamented on the next hole.

with the 8th halved in pars, it came down to the last hole, the club’s 18th. Ever the competitor, it was Millar who threw his second into about 8 feet. Fraser, also put his approach in close, while Papadatos, much closer to the green got one onto the front edge.

Papadatos effort for birdie was low, while Fraser, putting from much closer in could only watch as his chance just shaved the hole, leaving Millar to calmly slot his birdie for the win and the lions share of the day’s spoils.

It is the second year Millar has claimed the spoils, last year stumping his approach on the last claim a cool four skins.

It won’t be much of a celebration for the ACT-based Professional. Millar will be off again tomorrow at 8.10 in an all-local grouping alongside Nagle and the Murray Region Open Champion Josh Armstrong.
