Defending Champion Chris Campbell and local hope Bradley Germon share the lead at three-over after a testing second round of the Srixon NSW Amateur at Tuncurry Golf Club.

The pair will head into the final round with a one-shot advantage over Mudgee’s Mark Hale and the Australian Golf Club’s James Brownlow who sit at four over.

It won’t be a two-horse race, however, with 11 players still within seven shots of the lead.

Keith Shepherd and James Ponder are two shots further adrift at six over, while Chris Neville and Rod Moran are at eight over.

A trio of golfers lies at ten over; Greg Ellis, Andrew Hume and Michael Bell.

It was Germon, however, who made the move of the day. The local high school maths teacher vaulted himself into reckoning with the round of the tournament thus far, a stellar three under 69 in this morning’s wet and windy conditions.

Campbell, who held the co-lead overnight, had a rollercoaster day, with seven bogies and five birdies in the trying morning conditions for a two-over 74. The defending champion still on track for back to back wins.

Hale, who is keen to throw away the bridesmaid tag after a couple of near-misses in this tournament, will be buoyed by his afternoon round of one under par 71, the only round in red figures from the afternoon half of the draw. Brownlow meanwhile, the co-leader alongside Campbell overnight, is playing better than this afternoon’s three-over effort suggest and will also be hard to beat.

IN the women’s section, Lucie Quilliam looks to have both hands on the trophy, late on the second day. She holds a commanding lead over her nearest rivals Gemma Dooley, Sue Laird and Christine George.

Overnight leader Colette Blacklock carded a disastrous 90 to slip into 5th place at 24 over par.
