Concord, St Michael’s set for women’s Major Pennant rematch

Concord and St. Michael’s will go head to head for the second straight year in women’s Divison One Metropolitan Major Pennant after both teams recorded solid wins yesterday at Twin Creeks.

Despite a resounding 5 & 4 victory from The Australian’s Monica Johnson, St. Michael’s were too good for The Kensington outfit, running away with it 3 1/2 to 1 1/2.

Makensie Toole and Teresa Nurdi got the Maroubra women off to the best start with 3 & 2 and 2 & 1 wins, and when Danielle Vasquez accounted for Stefanie Hall 5 &4 the contest was all over, with the match of Australian Master of the Amateurs Champion, Stephanie Kyriacou and Hayley McNeill not required.

Concord, without Australian representative Doey Choi, had a much harder task against a plucky Bonnie Doon outfit, with the semifinal not decided until the final match on the 18th hole.

With the ‘Doon grabbing two early matches from Suzanne Fairhurst and Alena Oppenheimer, it took the talented pair of Maddison Woodley, Sophie Yip to square the contest.

Belinda Ji turned out to be the woman for the occasion, securing a place in the final for the defending champions with a one-up win over Taylor Newlin on the final hole.

Cronulla will be out snare their first Women’s Major Pennant when they take on Avondale in the Division Two final after both teams recorded 3 to 2 wins over their rivals Pymble and Moore Park.

Winners for Cronulla were Jenni Thuge, Sophia Perkins and Abbey Bull, while for Avondale, wins came from Lishan Sung, Kara Williams and June Song.

Action in the Division Two Women’s Major Pennant will begin this Sunday at Terrey Hills Golf and Country Club from 10.00am when Cronulla take on Avondale, then at 12.00pm Concord will meet St. Michael’s fro the WOmen’s Major Pennant Division one crown.
