Wet Country Champs beckon at Goulburn

Wet Country Champs beckon at Goulburn

There’s some much-needed rain on the radar for this weekend at Goulburn but it won’t stop the NSW Country Championship.

Over 120 of the best male amateur golfers from all over regional NSW are set descend on Goulburn Golf Club to battle it out for the 36-hole Country Championship and the coveted Interdistrict Teams Championship which will get underway tomorrow.

On offer for this year’s winner is an invitation to compete in the 2018 NSW Open at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club beginning on November 8th.

Honour Roll: NSW Country Championship

Recap 2017: Davies steals the day

The Country Championship boasts an honour roll that includes some of the New South Wales finest golfers including Nathan Green, Paul Sheehan, Lucas Parsons, Scott Gardiner and 15-time Japanese Tour winner, Brendan Jones. Dimi Papadatos, who has just graduated to the 2019 European PGA Tour, won the title in 2008.

The historic club in the Goulburn – Mulwaree region has a long association with the NSW Country Championship. One of the City’s favourite sons, Bruce Devlin, won the Country Championship title twice before embarking on a successful international career that included eight US PGA Tour wins and an Australian Open Championship as an amateur.

This year’s field boasts an incredible 56 golfers who play on a handicap of scratch or less and includes two former winners of the title, 2016 Champion Anthony Brunero from the Illawarra, and Robert Payne from Orange.

Current NSW men’s representatives Josh Armstrong of Canberra and the Central Coast’s Jordie Garner are also set to compete and will prove tough to beat. Armstrong had an incredible year in 2017 that culminated in selection for the Junior International President’s Cup team, while Garner took out the internationally recognised Federal Open amateur last November.

Play will get under way with a shotgun start on Saturday from 12.00pm, with a seeded shotgun start on Sunday, beginning at 8.00am.
