Monash, St. Michael’s set for Major Pennant Thriller

St. Michael’s and Monash will meet in the Division One final of Metropolitan Major Pennant after securing results in yesterday’s heatwave conditions.

Despite wins for Cronulla from Derryn Weigand and Shane Holden, Monash, who entered the away match against with a 5/2 lead, scooped up the required three games with victories from Sunil Patel (1 up), Doug Callem 2/1) and Danny Marshall ( 3/2) to put the result out of reach from the Shire squad.

In contrast to the Monash / Cronulla game, the Battle of the neighbours, St. Michael’s V NSW, went down to the wire. With St. Michael’s taking a 5/2 lead into the return leg, the match was always going to be tight.

Wins for NSW to Zac Mullins ( 5/3), Zinyo Garcia ( 2up), Jake Bake (3/2), and Dean Van Kampen(3&1) set the scene for a photo finish.

St. Michael’s however, with wins from Daley Loumanis ( 5/4), and Harrison Crowe (7/5) reached the important seven-game milestone, meant the result of the tie hinged on the Garner/ Doig match. Garner didn’t disappoint, holing a clutch putt on the last for a half, and with it a place in next week’s final at Riverside Oaks.

DIVISION II
Twin Creeks and Penrith will meet in the Division II final after securing their passage through to next Sunday’s final with solid wins.

Penrith, who lead after the away game back in august quickly secured the required games to progress courtesy of wins from Dale Hughes ( 6/5), Craig Montgomery (5/4), Chris Lawler ( 5/3) and Jeff Gadd ( 5/4).

Twin Creeks sent a clear message about their intentions in Sunday’s final, recording an impressive five matches to two win over North Ryde.

With the result hinging on the final match, it was Concord’s freshly crowned Club Champion Doey Choi, who got the better of her State teammate Kelsey Bennett on the last, with a vital two-up win.

In Division II, Moore Park will meet Avondale after the City team whitewashed Pymble five-nil.
