Major Pennant: St. Michael’s, Monash Hold Upper Hand

In what has been one of the longest breaks in interclub competition in years due to COVID, the 2020 Metropolitan Major Pennant Finals Series has finally got underway.

In Division I, St. Michael’s secured a 5/2 win over rivals and neighbours NSW. At the same time, the battle between the 2019 Division II winners, Monash, and Cronulla the 2018 DIV II champions, ended in the northerner’s favour, also by 5/2.

Wins to St Michael’s came from Harrison Crowe, Daniel Kollar, Weiliang Wang, Jeff Pullen and Daley Loumanis, while in the other semi, Nathan Barbieri, Jordan Mackay, Sunil Patel, Doug Cullam and Danny Marshall all scored wins.

In Division II, it was the away teams who had a field day. Twin Creeks will head back to their Luddenham base with a handy 4/3 away win after upsetting North Ryde, while Penrith took care of Oatlands also by a 4/3 margin.

Penrith’s wins came from Peter Morris, Will Arnold, Blade Gadd, and Chris Lawler. Twin Creeks winners were Matt Davies, Chris McMillan, Tyrone Emtage and Justin McMillan.

Cabramatta defeated Asquith 4/3 away, while Springwood and Cumberland finished tied at 3 1/2 apiece in the other semi in Divison Three.

Wins to Cabramatta came from Shannon Speller, Wayne Park, Jackson Graham, and Dylan Marsh.

Winners in the Springwood/ Cumberland semi were Isaak Pemble, Nigel Bles, Andrew Moon Shannon Bridger Matt Andrew and Paul Ballard. Brad Cole and Arthur Barakat, playing in the one match, couldn’t be split.

Randwick will be feeling quietly confident of progressing after a 5/2 home win in Div Four against Woolooware, Michael Williams the pick of the winners with a 5/4 result. Others to win from the club were Chris Forward, Peter Cox, Craig Mc Mahon and Rhys Fernandes.

Roseville have a handy 4/3 advantage when they return to home soil next week after knocking of Macarthruer Grange in Div Five. Callam Sharp, Tony McAllister, Andrew Butler and Shayne Stead the winners. While in the other Division Five semi, Kareela, now the home of the Sharks, took care of their neighbours Beverly Park, who are just down the road from Dragons HQ, five matches to 2.

KAreela’s wins came from Tod Mayne, Will Knight, Trent Seymour, Matthew Hardiman, and Shane Harding.

WOMEN:
St Michael’s and Concord couldn’t be split in their Divison one contest, ending 2 1/2 apiece. Kelsey Bennett took care of her State teammate Doey Coi, two-up, while other winners were Belinda Ji, Sophie Yip and St. Michael’s Pamela Tsiamis. Teresa Nurdi and Alyssa Wikan finished tied.

The Australian had a comfortable win against their neighbours, Bonnie Doon in the other semi, 3 1/2 to 1 1/2, with wins coming from Hayley McNeil, Amy Chu and Brielle Mapano.

In Division Two, Moore park whitewashed Pymble five-Nil, while Avondale Cruised to an easy away win against Lynwood 4/1.

Moore Park’s winners were Lucie Quilliam, Anna Booth, Angela Lu, Nikki Haines, and CHarlotte Huynh, while Grace Kim, June Song, Yeleen Son and Robyn Keen took points for Avondale.
