Things to do & Places to Stay

For Bourke Hill Lookout and Open Cut Mine

Fort Bourke Lookout, just minutes from Cobar, offers stunning views of the town, its open pit mine, and the surrounding landscape. From the viewing platform, you can see the Cobar mineral belt and the water pipeline from Burrendong Dam.

Located 300 metres above sea level, the lookout provides a fantastic vista, especially at sunset. To reach it, turn off the Kidman Way, head past the water tanks to the radio towers, and walk to the platform for one of the best views of Cobar.

Cobar Mining Heritage Park

The Cobar Mining Heritage Park, located near The Great Cobar Museum, showcases Cobar’s mining history in a beautiful garden setting. Key features include the Cobar Miners Memorial, honoring those who died in mining accidents or from related diseases, and a bronze sculpture of a miner.

The park also displays mining equipment like a restored stamper battery, a loader, a head frame, and the Miners Memorial bell tower. Visitors can explore the park, picnic on the lush grass, and learn about the area’s mining heritage through stories and exhibits.

The Big Beer Can

Located above the entrance to the Grand Hotel, the Big Beer Can stands about five meters tall and is two-and-a-half meters across. Built in 1990, it immediately took the Guinness world record for the largest beer can anywhere in the world. The can, which is accessible at all times, is so large that if filled with actual beer, it could hold about 22,000 litres.
