Hay Sunset Viewing Area

Experience a stunning sunset with 360-degree views, free from tall building or smog. Located 16 kilometres north of Hay on the Cobb Highway, the viewing area offers a breathtaking display of colours as the sun sets over the plains.

Hay Gaol Museum

Hay Gaol, built in the late 1870s and opened in 1880, has served various purposes including as a prison, maternity hospital, POW detention centre, and girls’ institute. Now a museum, it tells the story of Hay and its history.

Visitors can explore historic buildings, learn about past events like a POW escape, and view artifacts such as Australia’s oldest-known bark canoe, farm machinery, and 1880s clothings. The museum is open daily and the Apex Park on-site offers picnic areas and play equipment.

Shear Outback

At the Murray Downs Woolshed, enjoy daily live demonstrations where you can hear the shears, learn the trade lingo, meet the sheepdogs, and watch shearers at work.

Explore the machinery, sheep types, wool classing, and wool quality. Test your shearer skills and see if you can beat Jackie Howe’s record. The site also features the Australian Shearer’s Hall of Fame, homestead gardens, a maze, and a cafe offering morning or afternoon tea.
