Mayrung Primary School students have spent the past eight weeks developing their golf skills through a Sporting Schools program delivered by Golf NSW/JNJG Engagement Officer Jody Fleming.
The small regional school, located 30 minutes from Deniliquin and home to 38 students from Kindergarten to Year 6, embraced the program with commitment and focus.

Students participated in weekly two-hour sessions, learning the fundamentals of the game, including grip, stance, alignment, and swing technique, alongside practical challenges such as Bucket Golf and the Longest Hitting Competition, which used Rapsodo technology and NetReturn equipment to provide real-time feedback.
Jody Fleming, who first visited Mayrung in 2022, said returning to the school highlighted the students’ continued interest in golf.
“The kids remembered the activities from last time, and their enthusiasm for golf hasn’t faded,” she said.

Students reported practising outside the sessions, with several hitting balls on the school oval during lunch breaks. One student, Chloe, said she had already decided that golf was the sport she wanted to continue playing.
Teachers Mrs Young, Mrs Irwin, and Mrs Druitt, all golfers themselves, also took part in the sessions, demonstrating techniques and helping to inspire the students.
Golf NSW acknowledged the support of Birgit, whose efforts helped bring the program back to Mayrung.
The eight-week initiative demonstrates how even small regional schools can provide meaningful opportunities for students to engage in sport and develop skills in golf.
