Last week Woolooware Public School students swapped their school desks for the greens of Woolooware Golf Club, experiencing a real taste of what it’s like to play on an actual golf course.

Fifty excited students—36 boys and 14 girls—had been learning golf fundamentals at school for the past six weeks, and this visit was the ultimate field trip to put their new skills to the test.

“Not only are they learning important golf fundamentals, they are getting some experience on the golf course,” said Brad Ulph, Director of Golf at Woolooware Golf Club.

“Hopefully they can continue to visit us and develop into golfers for life.”

Under the guidance of JNJG (Jack Newton Junior Golf) and Golf NSW, along with coaches from FitXP, the students honed their putting and chipping skills, even taking shots at a spare hole designed for some long-range action.

Hamish, one of the boys, was all smiles after the event.

“I learned how to hit a 7-iron properly today. My longest shot was 104 metres,” he beamed.

Already a regular player, Hamish added, “I go about once a week, and I want to keep playing.”

For Helena, the visit was her first real dip into the world of golf.

“I learned how to chip today, and I had so much fun,” she said.

Although not a frequent player, Helena does sometimes hit the course with her dad. “My longest hit today was probably 100 metres.”

With the kids walking over from school, arriving at 12:15 and jumping into activities by 12:25, they squeezed in as much action as they could until it was time to head back to class at 2:10.

“They wanted to stay longer, but we had to wrap up before the end of lunch,” Ulph explained.

The feedback was glowing with everyone, from the students to the staff, excited to return. Woolooware Golf Club is already planning to welcome more schools to share in the experience, as the success of this day was undeniable.
