In an exciting weekend of golf, Newcastle Golf Club and Wollongong emerged victorious in their respective matches, setting up a highly anticipated face-off in The Master Pennants Regional Playoff.

Newcastle Golf Club has captured their third Northern Division Pennant in four years, edging out Waratah Golf Club 5.5 – 2.5 in a thrilling contest, bringing them ever closer to defending their State Final crown.

The dynamic duo of Greg Fraser and Nick Ebrill kickstarted Newcastle’s victory with emphatic 3&2 wins, but Waratah’s Scott Morrison fought back fiercely, securing a 5&4 win to keep the suspense alive.

Newcastle’s Captain, Mark Ellison, delivered a commanding 5&4 victory, and Jason McBeath showed nerves of steel, sinking his putt on the 17th hole for a crucial 2&1 win.

With just half a point needed and the tension mounting, Newcastle’s Brian Carmichael needed only two putts to square his match and seal the Pennant.

“Two more games to go, hopefully,” said Ellison after their win.

Meanwhile, Wollongong triumphed in a heart-stopping match against The Links Shell Cove.

Paul Zuiderwyk of Links Shell Cove set the pace with a decisive 5&4 win, however, it was the brilliant performances by Wollongong’s Colin Bloomfield, who triumphed 6&5, and John Heffernan, who secured a 4&3 win, that energized the team.

Jack Regan’s clutch 1-up victory put Wollongong in the driver’s seat, but the excitement soared when Brett Dowd’s 2-up and Andrew McColl’s 2&1 wins levelled the playing field, with just two players left on the course.

With nothing separating Dean Jones and Scott Ready, who shared their point, the stage was set for a dramatic finish.

In the fading light, Wollongong’s Steve Webb stepped up, and with the weight of the match on his shoulders, nailed a birdie putt to clinch the victory for his team.

“What an incredible win for the club. We are beyond thrilled. It’s simply unbelievable,” exclaimed Webb.
