Newcastle’s Jason McBeath has claimed the Newcastle Hunter Senior Classic and along with it the spoils of a spot in the NSW Senior Open at Thurgoona Country Club Resort in October.
McBeath followed his impressive round of 72 (even) at Newcastle Golf club with another solid round of 75 (+3) at Horizons Golf Resort for a total of 147 (+3).
“I’m excited with the win and qualifying for the Open. Wasn’t sure at first if I had done enough.” smiled Jason
Current SOOM leader Andy Hugill picked up his fourth win of the season, claiming the Horizons Seniors with an impressive 72 (even) today and clinched the second spot on offer for the NSW Senior Open with a total of 152 (+8).
“Enjoyed the golf course and great to pick up another win. Looking forward to Thurgoona.” Replied Hugill
Overnight leader Peter Callingham shot a round of 81 (+9) for a total of 152 (+8) and fell agonising short of that second spot for Thurgoona on a countback.

Day one Wrap: Callingham on Top in Newcastle Hunter Classic
In what was perfect conditions at Newcastle Golf Club, Peter Callingham of East Leisure Maitland GC will take a 1 shot lead into the second round of Newcastle Hunter Senior Classic.
His round of 71 (1 under par) which included 4 birdies and 3 bogeys, was impressive on a day where others found it difficult to score.
“The course was perfect, greens were brilliant and it could have been 2-3 shots less with a few putts shaving the hole,” smiled Peter.
Newcastle’s Jason McBeath and Lincon McLaren from Camden GC sit only 1 shot behind after a solid rounds of 72 (even par).
“I’ll definitely take that round. It wasn’t easy out there,” claimed Jason.
Day 2 will be played @ Horizons Golf Resort with the Top 2 Scratch scores of the Newcastle / Hunter Senior Classic gaining automatic entry to the 2023 NSW Senior Open Championship at Thurgoona GC
