PENNANT: The Australian make it four in a row in Division I

2023 Women's Major Pennant winners - the Australian

Division 1 – The Australian defeated Concord 4-1

The Australian Golf Club have made it four Women’s Metropolitan Major Pennants in a row claiming the 2023 Division 1 Final.

Concord, their final opponent, was looking to avenge last year’s results and looked very strong throughout the season.

Played at St. Michael’s GC, the contest was always going to be tight, and this was no exception, with four of the matches going at least to the 17th hole.

Lara Thomsen was impressive, winning 7 & 6 over Amy Squires to get things rolling for the defending champions.

Ella Scaysbrook and Hayley McNeill secured wins in close matches, which saw Hayley win two up and Ella 2 & 1.

Both remaining games between Annika Rathbone and Belinda Ji, and between Charlotte Perkins and Sophie Yip, were signalled in with the Overall Result finalised.

“Our players showed great mental strength under pressure to seal the win, assisted by some wonderful caddies and strong spectator support from our Club,” Team Manager Edwina Kennedy said.

“With nine players in our squad – seven aged from 12 to 19 and two more experienced players, we were lucky to have some flexibility, particularly as other significant events clashed with many Pennant dates.”

The Australian didn’t have it all go their way this year and were pushed until the end in an incredibly close semi-final against St. Michael’s.

“We know that St. Michael’s, Concord and others will be determined to stop our run next year and we look forward to an even more challenging season in 2024.”
