Rising star Kelsey Bennett has been honoured by Shoalhaven City Council by being named the region’s Australia Day Sportsperson of the Year.
Bennett, 22, had memorable wins in the Tasmanian Open, Northern Territory Amateur, and the Victorian Amateur during the last 12 months. In November, she finished equal second in the International Women’s Amateur Asia Pacific Championship in Abu Dhabi.
While working and studying for her HSC, Kelsey finds time to teach golf to young children and she assists PGA Professional Staff with Junior development at several clinics and local primary schools.
With her world amateur ranking rising to 122, Kelsey is now recognised as one of Australia’s leading young female amateurs. The Shoalhaven Australia Day Committee described her as a true inspiration.
The Award was announced on Monday at the Ulladulla Civic Centre, near Bennett’s home in Mollymook.
Former winners include Nick Maddinson & Ian Davis (Cricket), Paul Green (Athletics), Karen Murphy (Lawn Bowls), Andrew Walker (Rugby League & Union) and Karen Phillips (Swimming).
