SAND GREENS: Locals Sweep Sand Greens Champs

SAND GREENS: Locals Sweep Sand Greens Champs

It’s a clean sweep for the local brigade at the 2021 NSW Sand Green Championships at Nyngan Golf Club.

Local fancy David Rose used his home course knowledge in the less than ideal conditions, posting a five- over 73 to claim a two-shot win from the fast-finishing Mark Hale of Mudgee Golf Club.
Overnight leader, Vaughan Saunders of Beechworth had a day he would probably like to forget, carding an 11- over 79 to finish four shots back of Rose in a tie for third alongside Mangrove Mountain’s Nathan Cooke.

In the Nett it was another local, Brad Webster who blew them away, finishing an impressive nine-under par (nett) to win by a handy five shots. Aaron Bennett, Tyren Bennett and another Nyngan local, Mark Beetson, tied for second alongside Binalong’s Andrew Hore at four under.

Paul Besgrove of Dunedoo claimed the NSW VGA Gross title, while Mark Beetson, courtesy of his tied runners-up finish in the overall nett, claimed the NSWVGA nett division.

Warren Golf Club’s Joe Walker was too strong in the Juniors, while the team of  Mark Beetson, Greg Matheson, and Tim Lewis walked away with the teams prize.

Day TWO: Play underway under cloudy skies

Despite the weather and plenty of puddles from the downpour overnight, play is underway in the final round of the NSW Sand Greens Championship at Nyngan Golf Club.

Beechworth’ Vaughan Saunders the 2017 Champion, who carded a tidy one under par 67 in the opening round, is the man they are all chasing.

Local hopes Dvid Rose and Joh Wynne will lead the chasing pack, however the weather reports don’t look promising.

Day ONE Wrap:  Saunders Sand Greens Leader

2017 Sand Greens Champion Vaughan Saunders is the man they will all be trying to catch in tomorrow’s final round of the NSW Sand Green Championships.

Saunders, from Beechworth Golf Club was the only player to shoot in red numbers, crafting a one-under 67 to establish a two shot lead over local hope, David Rose from Nyngan.

Trundle’s Bill Tomlinson and another local, John Wynne, are a further three shots back, while sitting at five over are Graeme Phillipson (Manildra), Stephen Perry (Nyngan), and perennial bridesmaid in Golf NSW events, Mudgee’s Mark Hale.

121 players battled the overcast and humid conditions with the Nyngan layout getting the better of many. Thankfully the field stayed well hydrated when the sun made an appearance mid-afternoon.

In the Vets category, Condoblin’s Brad Hurley leads, however local Tony Lewis is lurking a shot behind, while in the Juniors, Joey Walker of Warren Golf Club carded a handy 78.
