Cornell Claims the Spoils at Senior Classic

Adam Cornell

Adam Cornell has saved his best for last , claiming a one shot win in the NSW Senior Classic today at Avondale Golf Club.

The Royal Sydney gun carded one of the rounds of the day – an excellent one over 73 around testing Avondale layout to add to his back-to-back rounds of 77 at The Lakes and The Australian Golf Clubs.

Port Macquarie’s David Bagust, in second place overnight, added a third successive 76 to keep second place, while second round leader, Dunheved’s John Fearnley, had a day he most likely would like to forget, finishing with an 83.

Fearnley Leads By Five

Shoalhaven Heads Ian Asbury finished fourth outright at 17 over, while four golfers, Russell Rogers, Warren Gorton, Robert Smythe and Craig Green rounded out the top five at plus 19.

The day, however, belonged to Cornell, who was thrilled to collect his first win in the senior ranks after reaching the qualifying ager a little over two years ago.

“I hung in there. I hit a few greens today, had a couple of difficult putts and avoided the trees. Sort of kept my head together.

“This a great tournament, I really enjoyed it,,” he smiled.

The win guarantees Cornell a start in the Lincoln Place NSW Senior Open. Runner up David Bagust has also secured his place in the open, to be held at Thurgoon Golf & Country Club in late October.
