Jeffrey Guan and Joshuaa Robards have been declared joint Champions in the Boys, while Concord’s Sophie Yip was declared Girls Champion for 2020 after play was abandoned in the final round of the NSW Junior Championships at Mount Broughton Golf & Country Club.
When a fierce electrical storm rolled through the Southern Highlands, bringing a halt to proceedings and any more play impossible, officials were forced to reduce the tournament to 54 Holes.
As a result, Guan of The Australian and Robards of Newcastle were declared joint winners of the Boys Championship courtesy of their 54-hole total of nine-under.
A fitting result, the NSW Junior is a first major state title for both. For Robards, it was his final junior event before heading off to US College to study Aerospace Engineering,
“It was good of JNJG to let all of those who were under the 18 year old limit at the time the original tournament was scheduledplay,” Robard smiled.”it is pretty cool.”
“Even as joint winners, I’m pretty happy.”
For Guan, the win was validation of his prodigious talent after impressive performances in recent years.
“Josh and I both played well.
“I might have been a few shots ahead when it was called, but it is what it is.
“It’s still one of my biggest wins,” Guan said.
Both players are now eligible for a start in next year’s NSW Open at Concord Golf Club n March.
“My first pro event, it will be very cool to be part of it, a big highlight.” Robards grinned.
No Choice but Sophie
In the Girls, Concord’s Sophie Yip was crowned champion, recording a five-stroke win.
Tied with Newcastle’s Ella Scaysbrook after two rounds, Yip chose the right time to put her foot to the floor, opening up a substantial lead during the third round.
It is a first State Girls crown for Yip, and adds to her impressive resume.
“It wasn’t too bad to be honest.
“I knew I had to hang in there, play steady and hit it straight. It’s what I
“It’s mu first win in a while, so I’m pretty happy,”
“I’ve got three more tournaments at the beginning of next year, so, 2021 let’s go!” Yip smiled.
