Peter Mitchell leads the men’s section of the NSW Senior Amateur after the opening round at Duntryleague Golf Club.
Mitchell, a member at the historic Orange course, was the only player in the 156-strong field to break par on a perfect day for golf. His one-under-par 69 good enough to lead by a shot from Links Shell Cove’s Graham Leake. Another two shots back is Peter Kirwin of Cowra and Warren Gorton of Hawks Nest. John Mihaljevic of Royal Canberra is in 5th place at two over.
Robert Payne, the 14-time club champion at Duntryleague, has some work in front of him if he is to secure a second Senior State Amateur title after carding an opening five over par 75.

In the restricted age divisions, Mitchell leads the 55-59yrs from Peter Kirwin. In the 60-64 yrs Warren Gorton leads by a shot from Graham Blizard, while Dale Tapper leads Stefan Albinski by a shot in the 65-69 yrs division.
Maitland’s Michael Robbins leads the men’s over 70 by five shots.
Mitchell also leads the net division on 66. Michael Carter from the Grange is one back on 67, with Warren Gorton another shot back on 68. Mona Vale’s John Karen is the only other player under par after a nett 69.
Central Coast pair lead the way
Kim Burke and Louise Mullard share the lead in the Women’s Senior Amateur after carding matching rounds of four over 76.
The central coast pair holds a three-shot lead over defending champion, Jacqui Morgan and Duntryleague’s, Susan Fenwick, who carded rounds of 79.
The women’s nett is a logjam with three players tied for the lead.
Jennifer Roberts of Monash, Maggie Hayes of Bermagui, and another Duntryleague local, Michelle Paul, carded one over 73’s.
Robyn Watt from Waratah is in 4th a shot back, while Burke and Mullard are in a three-way tie for 6th alongside Margot Sullivan.
In the age divisions, Louise Mullard leads the 55-59yrs, Kim Burke the 60-64 yrs, and Bermagui’s Maggie Hayes leads the 65-69yrs.
In the women’s 70’s plus Robyn Watt leads by four from Pat Woodberry.
