Niciejewski Cruises to Blind Golf Open at Liverpool

Queensland’s Glenn Niciejewski has followed up a first-round nett 78 with a nett 79 to take out 2019 NSW Blind Golf Open at Liverpool Golf Club early this week.

Niciejewski was in good form leading into the Tournament and was ‘stoked’ to have taken out the championship against such a quality field.

“I was just glad to keep it in play and avoid the trees and bunkers.” Credit goes to my caddy Peter Harrington for getting me through the two days unscathed,” a jubilant Niciejewski said.

Conditions for the first round were far from ideal for the competitors with the extreme heat and wind making things tough.

Gary Sargent and his caddy Eileen (NSW, 41 H’Cap) from the B2 category and Brad Carver and Caddy Dennis (QLD, 32 H’Cap) from B3 both shot an impressive nett 72 in the testing conditions.

A shot back after the day one was Michele Watts (NSW, 33 H’Cap) from B3 and another six back was Niciejewski (QLD, 47 H’Cap) in category B1.

Conditions improved for the second day with the caddies and players alike enjoying their time out on course. The overnight leaders struggled to follow up their opening rounds, however, paving the way for Glenn Niciejewski to swoop and take out the championship in a thrilling finish.

It is the first time the championship has been held at the highly-rated Lansvale course, with players coming from across Australia to compete. Despite the extreme conditions, organisers called the event a success.

Graham Coulton, Secretary of Blind Golf NSW, was thrilled with the camaraderie between the competitors and thanked the Club for accommodating the players on both days.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Blind Golfers are classified into three sight divisions. B1 represents totally blind competitors who are required to wear blackout glasses for the full round.

B2 competitors have an only light perception to limited useful vision, and B3 competitors are declared legally blind with more than 85% loss of vision.

The Tournament is played as a handicap stroke championship, with all competitors having a caddy to assist with lining up shots and to direct them around the course.
