Brad Burns the field with an opening 66

Brad Burns holds a two-shot lead midway through the opening day of the Lincoln Place NSW Senior Open.

ON a day where the wind is giving the Thurgoona country club layout some bite, the Queenslander tore around in six under par 66, with five birdies and a spectacular eagle on the par-four 15th hole.

“I was very conservative I hit a two-iron off the tee,

“I hit a great approach shot, it landed about six feet short and it went in.

“One of the lady spotters souveniered the ball, so she was happy as well.” Burns smiled.

The only blemish of the day for Burns came on the final hole with an ill-timed bogey after failing to get up and down from the front edge. It was an annoying way to finish, but he was still satisfied with his score in the testing conditions.

“It played tough out there today. The wind was up, the greens are super. good.

“I started pretty slow, four pars in a row, then made a couple of birdies, and the eagle certainly helped.

Burns said he had been in some good form of late, and today was no exception.

“I’ve been putting weel last couple of weeks, and today was no exception. I played pretty solid,” he added.

Two shots behind Burns is fellow Queenslander Mark Tickle, while another shot back is American Richard Gilkey.

Defending champion Michael Long made a disappointing bogey on the last and sits alongside a group of golfers five shots back at one-under.
