Golf NSW High Performance Program Selection

The criteria outlined here are used as a guide to select candidates for inclusion in the HPP. Although these are general in nature, they are set out by Golf NSW in consultation with Golf Australia. The final decision on the selection of successful candidates rests with the Golf NSW High-Performance Committee and in consultation with The Golf NSW High-Performance Manager and program support personnel.

The following criteria will be utilised for program selection:

  • Australian citizen
  • Results (state, national, international)
  • Rankings
  • Dedication to the process of reaching their full potential on and off the golf course
  • Potential to reach Golf NSW’s long-term High-Performance Program vision
  • Meet Golf NSW Education requirements (see below for details)

Golf NSW (Australia) High Performance Pathway Levels

Tier One – Rookie Professional

Golf Australia Rookie’s comprises male and female athletes selected by Golf Australia who are in the first 5 years of their professional careers. Past and present NSW players that have been selected as GA Rookie’s include; Cam Davis, Travis Smyth, Blake Windred, Steph Kyriacou and Grace Kim. Tier 1 athletes are considered the future of Australian golf and have the tools capable of achieving the programs objectives of winning major championships, Olympic medals and top-100 world ranking positions.

Tier Two – Elite Amateur

These players are categorised as elite amateurs who have demonstrated an ability to compete successfully at national and  international  levels and are likely to be transitioning to professional within 12-18 months.

Note – on most occassions players at this level will have been elevated from within Tier 3 due to their WAGR ranking, tournament results and a sustained demonstration of dedication and commitment to their “off course” preparation and fulfilling their potential to the highest level while in the HPP.

Tier Three – State Development

These players are categorised as developing elite amateurs competing at the national level with some notable results and are showing the potential to reach Tier 2.

Tier Four – State Talent Identification

These players are categorised as emerging amateurs (elite juniors) aged approx 15-18 years old that have been identified as having the potential to reach higher levels of the pathway.

Jack Newton Junior Golf

Jack Newton Junior Golf conducts an extensive competition and player development program for players aged under 18.

Golf NSW believes in the importance of education in a player’s development and as such stipulate that those selected have met or are the process of meeting a minimum level of education to be involved in the program.

For those of school age, ideally, this minimum is that they are currently enrolled at Secondary School until they receive the Higher School Certificate.

Golf NSW also recognises that there are alternative educational opportunities available to those that are of school age and are not currently enrolled at an NSW High School undertaking the requirements to attain the HSC .

These people are still eligible to apply for the Golf NSW HPP but will be required to have enrolled and be undertaking a formally recognised education or training course (e.g. TAFE) at least until that point in time that they would have graduated year 12.

Golf NSW also believes in the continued development of oneself beyond high school via “off-course” activities such as continuing education or employment while pursuing their golfing goals. As such those that are selected into the HPP are encouraged to either seek ongoing education and/or work part-time while they are in the Golf NSW HPP.

Note – players aged under 17 need to meet the NSW Government Department of Education requirements in relation to leaving school. These requirements can be found at

Program Duration
