Macquarie Links International Golf Club is located less than an hour’s drive from the Sydney CBD between Ingleburn and Macquarie Fields.
Designed by the renowned Robin Nelson, the architect responsible for Mauna Lani, Hawaii and the Bali Golf and Country Club, Macquarie Links opened in 2001.
Built in the best tradition of a Scottish links but with the Australian bush character at its heart, the course rolls out over some magnificent land. Native bushes, mature gum trees, dams and a well-placed creek are features.
Perhaps the most telling reference to the course’s heritage lies in the strategically placed pot bunkers gracing several holes.
First timers at Macquarie Links often fall into believing the challenge is easy as they begin their round.
Generous fairways and a couple of shorter holes mean birdies can be had. It’s the homeward nine, however, which is the more challenging.
Nowhere is this better illustrated than the two par threes on the back nine. The 170 metre long 11th, called ‘Billabong’, which plays across a ravine, and the 209 metre 15th, known as ‘Sheep-Dip’. Both require pinpoint accurate tee shots.
The 18th too, can be a beast. A straight drive is crucial, and the approach from a downhill lie to a green protected by bunkers and water is no pushover. Walk away with a par and you should be very happy.
The Clubhouse and facilities at Macquarie Links are first class. In addition to the full length driving range, a chipping green, practice bunker and putting green are available for a pre-round warm up.
The Macquarie Links International Golf Club’s restaurant is also open for lunch and snacks until 5pm daily. Catering for all tastes with Asian, Indian, Italian and Western offerings on its expansive menu it’s a welcome stop at then end of a round.
