The NSW Amateur Championship dates back to 1898 and is one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious golf tournaments. The Championships are National and World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) Events.
Played in conjunction, the NSW Medal and Women’s Strokeplay are played over 36 holes, with the leading 32 men and 16 women available players progressing to the elimination rounds for the NSW Amateur Championship.
Matches in the NSW Amateur are conducted over 18 holes, with the final decided over 36 holes.
Also incorporated into the 36 hole qualifying rounds is the Men’s NSW Champion of Club Champions Trophy.
Played in conjunction with the Women’s Strokeplay Championship is the Leo Wray Bowl for the 36 hole nett winner, The Country Championship Cup and the Metropolitan Championship Cup.
The honour roll of past Men’s NSW Amateur champions includes players who went on to take out State and National Open Championships and includes two Major Champions; Sir Michael Campbell (1992), and Jim Ferrier (1931,34, 37,& 38).
Past Women’s NSW Amateur Champions include World Golf Hall of Fame member Karrie Webb, Three-time winner Nikki Campbell, and world-renowned opera singer Dame Joan Hammond.
The Championship is open to amateur golfers who hold a current Australian or overseas equivalent GC handicap that does not exceed 5.4 for men and 12.4 for women. Club Champions from NSW Golf Clubs are eligible to enter the Championship if their GA handicap is greater than 5.4.
The maximum field size for the Championship will be 264 players (132 men, 132 women). The Championship Committee reserves the right to
increase the number of male or female players should the total field size not be achieved. In the event of entry applications exceeding the number of places available in the Championship, applications from those higher handicap competitors not exempt from a handicap ballot will be decided by a handicap ballot. Unsuccessful applicants will be informed without delay and given the opportunity to compete if withdrawals subsequently occur. Monies received from balloted entrants, who do not subsequently
compete, will be refunded in their entirety.
The NSW Medal is played over two courses. It is two rounds of 18-holes stroke play for the men’s field, played over two days. The field changes venue for their second round. The winner of the 36 holes stroke play section of the Championship is the winner of the NSW Medal.
The NSW Strokeplay is played over two courses. It is two rounds of 18-holes stroke play for the women’s field, played over two days. The field is divided between the two venues for the first day’s play with players changing venues for their second round. The winner of the 36 holes stroke play section of the Championship is the winner of the NSW Strokeplay Championship.
The Men’s Champion of Champions will be played in conjunction with the NSW Medal. The Women’s Champion of Champions is held separately. For further details see the Golf NSW calendar of events.
The leading 32 players from the NSW Medal (who have been nominated to play in the NSW Amateur) will be eligible to compete in the Men’s NSW Amateur Championship Match Play, with each match played over 18-holes other than the Final which is played over 36-holes. The match play is seeded with ties determined by lot.
The leading 16 players from the NSW Strokeplay (who have been nominated to play in the NSW Amateur) will be eligible to compete in the Women’s NSW Amateur Championship Match Play, with each match played over 18-holes other than the Final which is played over 36-holes. The match play is seeded with ties determined by lot.
